TEMPLES

Temples are located on each side of the forehead and between where the hairline and meets the top of the cheek and extends to the outer edge eyebrow. Under the skin of the temples is the temporalis muscle, involved with chewing. This muscle often increases with teeth clenching and excessive chewing and especially of gum. Under that is fat and bone. Hollowing of the temples occurs naturally with ageing. This ageing process involves many changes, with bone reabsorped as the skull shrinks, fat loss and connective tissue loss adds to the hollowing.

What is Temple Hollowing?

Temple hollowing can make a face appear skeletal and gaunt. Those patients who keep themselves very lean are also the hardest hit in the temples - for example runners, heavy exercisers and professional athletes can look much gaunter in that area as they age. With weight loss, Temples are one of the first areas to show volume loss in the face. Often people try to hide this with covering the temple hollowing with their hair.

Treatment:

Dermal fillers are used to correct temple hollowing or concavities to a more neutral or flat position. By revolumising the lost volume in the temples, it helps balance facial areas by smoothing the transition between the temples and forehead and the temples and the cheeks. This makes the areas blend and reduces the aged look from temple hollowing.

We often start with 1ml and repeat 2-4weeks till you reach your desired results. If you feel you like the initial swelling, then you may require more filler. The average amount is 1-3mls of dermal filler. Dermal fillers are temporary but also can be reversible(dissolved if required).

Another method is Autologous fat transfer, using one’s own fat. This is performed by one of our Certified Plastic Surgeons. It does involve surgical liposuction first, to remove your fat before it can be injected.
