EXCESSIVE SWEATING

(HYPERHIDROSIS)

An inherited condition of excess sweating due to hyperactive sweat glands. It most commonly affects the armpits, hands and/or feet, face (forehead, nose & upper lip) and scalp of its sufferers. This condition may also significantly affect the psychological and social wellbeing of those distressed by it, causing physical discomfort, social embarrassment and low self-esteem.

How does it work?

A very simple remedy is through the administration of the injectable muscle relaxant, “Botulinum toxin”, also used for relaxing frowns or crow’s feet for cosmetic purposes. Through the application of this neurotoxin to the armpit area, the usual signal sent from the brain is interrupted, resulting in a “dry spell” whereby sweating is markedly decreased; this result may last for 6-12 months.

What does the treatment involve?

  • Initially, a topical iodine/starch test is performed to assess the sweating problem.

  • The actual procedure itself takes less than 30 minutes.

  • Approximately 50u is needed to each armpit (100u is in each vial) requiring 100u total per session.

  • If you request a referral from your GP to the plastic surgeon’s office for hyperhidrosis, the cost of your treatment may earn a partial rebate from Medicare.

What pain relief is needed?

A topical anaesthetic cream may be applied 30-45 min prior to injections and/or laughing gas may be offered as a distraction and comfort.

What to expect after treatment?

  • The effects start working within 2-8 days with full results at 3-4 weeks.

  • Can return to work immediately

  • No deodorant for 4 hours

  • On average, results may last 8 -12 months
